Hi LK I am looking forward to Friday. I have a question - and one that I hope the 3.0 community can contribute to: Accessibility or Inclusion? I strongly believe that when we talk about accessibility we need to expand our understanding of who we...

Hi Erika - we're having a bit of a discussion about the Museum's Social Media Strategy on our website. I posted your link there also so maybe our staff will do your survey. Best of luck with it.

Profile Information

About Me:
I am the Head of Audience Research at the Australian Museum, Sydney. I have published widely in museum evaluation and write the Audience Research in museums blog with a readership of around 500 per month. I am particularly interested in visitor experiences and learning and how these can be measured, young children’s learning, Indigenous evaluation, as well as the strategic uses of audience research and new technologies in organisational change. I am happily obsessed with all things Web 2.0 and curious to see how this will change the world that museums operate within and the ways people learn. In 2007 I completed my PhD in museum learning, and now that’s finished I am looking forward to the adventures the new web world will bring.

For the next 12 months (to September 2009) I will also be resonsible for the overall management of the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes (AMEP) and the Museum's Web Unit, working with two wonderful managers to deliver on AMEP's 20th anniversary and the website rebuild.

Some personal philosophies:
* spelling is the number one skill we will need in this new and confusing world
* life is too short to drink bad wine
* asparagus is evil
* just do it ... and apologise later.

I administer this Museum 3.0 site – so please feel free to send me any comments and feedback. I'm still new to this so there may be some clunky bits!

From GLAM-WIKI: Finding the Common Ground

Hi all, we're here at the War Memorial in Canberra at a fascinating event where dialogue is taking place about how we can work better together.

There is an active Twitter stream here (I hope this link works!). All links from presentations are on delicious here.

Themes emerging for me so far:
* how active & engaged citizens are in work… Continue

Musings from Museums Australia 2009: Works in Progress

In the spirit of my previous post, Do we need to have conferences anymore, thought I'd at least start the ball rolling with observations from the Museums Australia Annual Conference. Well, I don't actually have any at the moment coz I'm only here from today, but we do have a Twitter backchannel happening.

My challen… Continue

culture – access – innovation: Museums Aotearoa Tairawhiti Conference

Attending this conference from today through Friday. Have blogged my first piece from the Visitor Research workshop here, with another to come.

We are running a Twitter feed - hash tag #manz09 - but since there's little internet access that I could find this will be very limited!

Sorry, but this is a dumb question - getting an RSS feed from this site

Can someone help me explain this process to new members please? As I'm an administrator I see the page differently to other users.

It would be really useful for one of you more 'techy' types to explain to us how this is done ? I know that if you reply to a discussion or blog you automatically get updates, maybe that's all you need to do?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Learning from our Twitter xperiment

If you've been following my other post called Project AMEP you'll know that we are trying out some Web 2.0 tools for one of our large projects here. The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes (AMEP) are Australia's premier science awards, culminating in a gala dinner for over 900 assorted VIPS and science-types. We wanted to do live updates of winners and other assorted tidbits from the dinner and decided to use a Tw… Continue

Thank's for your message
I understand I am concerning.
When I sent messages in the first place, it was considered by some, without checking out, as a spam
I was just unfamiliar with your way of communication.

In my opinion, when occurred some uncomfortable events, the first step is to check out
what's going on from a neutral position.
Writing something like "dear yves, we are not working this way. Don't write to
every one, just open a blog and let peoples coming to you by themselves"
First is a nice way to remind the rules to someone which is new.
Second it takes in consideration mistake can happened.

Many times peoples are doing thing in a good will but with a bad result.
It is not a reason to threw out the water with the baby

Concerning comments on profile, I was sure it was related.
Peoples wrote on their profile they are concerned with new techno.
I put message only where there was such notice
Again my mistake and I am sorry for
Nobody wrote me "please stop, this is not the way we are working"
Or
"Thank you, I am not interested"

I am not selling product.
I will take out all element which let you think so.

The point and the reason of my position is the concept and the devices are so powerful, it is already a major R&D which a crucial potential of change for the museum. Not necessarily in the good sense.
Android and Iphone are already equipped with the first elements. Samsung and toshiba are coming with their own devices
Time the complete chain will be integrated is not so far
And It will not be necessarily a US or European operator
As India or China or even Russia took control on some part of the European and US economy, they will took control on the culture, considered as an economic domain (or more exactly a part of the tourist industry)

The operators will be able to do exactly what they want. Without you
What are you going to do if in some close future, visitors will come with there own miniaturized device who is following them as they want and counseling them according their own interest and preferences. What will you do if all the comments, all the "contents" will be done by the operator without any part from you ?
The "lunettes rouges" effect !

lunette rouge was the kickname of a unknown person who put on Internet free download visits for le Louvre.

Hello Linda,
What is latest in Australian museums? Is there anything developed worth wov!!!?
I got an intersting result to continue with Education and Entertainment. More than 50% of visitors choose Education and Entertainment with open repeat visit(any time when they get an opportunity), when this option is provided. Even school children are mostly coming out with this option. When I have surveyed in an amusement park here, most people(72%) opted the visit as costly entertainment and no scope for repeat visit for atleast a year. Further I am refining the questions to get to know what is considered as education? and Entertainment?
Hope to receive your comments.
