Collections in relation to the museum’s audienceI worked as an assistant to Adriana Munoz, Head Curator for the collections at the Museum of World Culture, Gothenburg, Sweden. Exhibition development for a new exhibit opening May 2010.
My Masters program, is a two year program completing in spring 2010, during which time I had been accepted to do my internship as a part of the program at the Museum of World Culture in the fall of 2009 in Gothenburg, Sweden. My purpose with the placement was to explore the bridge between the collections and the museum’s audience and to address problems related to material culture. Many times museums in Sweden and the United States have huge collections which they never use and the societies which pay tax dollars to support them do not find the museum valid and/or applicable to their everyday lives. By looking at a museums collection as being intangible heritage, as well as new media, I was exploring if we could create that missing link to the audience and attract more people to the cultural sector, by involving them in the development of a new exhibit opening in May 2010 at the Museum of World Culture.
