Information

Museum Studies Students

This is a group for all Museum Studies students, both current and prospective. Anyone is welcome to join, past, present and future students. This is a place where you can connect with other students to discuss your ideas, hope and dreams.

Location: Sydney
Members: 76
Latest Activity: Dec 2

This group aims to inspire students in Museum Studies to discover and follow their passions in the Museum world. If you have been wanting to ask a silly question, please jump right in! (Don't worry, your question is probably not that silly).

Are you looking for ideas for assignments, essays, projects, or internships? Start a discussion and ask your fellow students.

You might have some links or resources you want to share, or a favourite museum or exhibition.

You might be interested in a career in the museum profession and want to talk to other students who are currently studying.

Or you might just want to join to know you aren't the only one out there sitting at your computer late at night putting the finishing touches on your essays or reading your course notes.

Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones

A two-day international symposium for PhD students and early career researchers.

Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th December 2009.
University of Leicester, UK.

Join us at the new School of Museum Studies this December for the symposium Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones.

Museums are all about the material world; the display and preservation of works of art, their presentation and interpretation to audiences. Yet, it can be argued that it is the 'intangible' elements of objects, museums and their audiences which create meanings from the material world. Between the 'material' and the 'intangible' often a controversial, defined division is perceived. Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones intends to challenge this fixed division and explore a more fluid conceptual space, where the ‘material’ and the ‘intangible’ interweave.

We have devised an exciting programme of presentations and workshops, keynote speakers and artistic interventions, which engage with materiality and intangibility in inspiring and innovative ways.

Confirmed keynote speakers: Dr Sandra Dudley, University of Leicester and Dr Kostas Arvanitis, University of Manchester.

A provisional programme shall be available shortly. Please refer to The Attic (http://attic-museumstudies.blogspot.com) for further details.

The events will be hosted by the research student community based at the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, a leading internationally renowned centre for Museum Studies and teaching since 1966. The School was recently assessed as having the highest proportion of world-leading research in any subject in any UK university (RAE 2008).

Booking fee: £20 (includes lunch and refreshments and refreshments on both days).

Please see The Attic for more information and a downloadable/printable booking form.
