The Jodi Awards are an annual awards in the cultural sector for accessible websites and uses of technology. To date, this has been within the museum, library and archive sectors in the UK, though we are looking in future to expand to the wider arts and creative sectors, and potentially internationally.

The Jodi Awards are run by the Jodi Mattes Trust, a registered charity whose 'objects' are:

To advance the education of the public in the arts in particular but not exclusively through the promotion of equal access for disabled people to culture and the creative arts through digital technology by:
(i) raising awareness of the barriers to the experience of cultural and creative life;
(ii) promoting best practice in the cultural and creative industries;
(iii) developing new approaches within cultural and creative organisations to using design, communication and interpretation in the service of accessible experiences.

We'll update with information and news around the Jodis in due course.

Martha Lane Fox to present Jodi Awards 2009

Martha Lane Fox, Champion for Digital Inclusion, will present the 2009 Jodi Awards on December 2 at the Sackler Centre, V&A Museum, London. Martha’s aim with Digital Inclusion is to promote technology to help people’s lives and life opportunities.
“Social exclusion has been a major factor for many disabled people living a life of limited opportunity,” said Matthew Cock, Chair of the Jodi Mattes Trust and Head of Web at the British Museum.
“In an age when digital technology is at the forefront of society, it is vital that accessibility is central to our work in the cultural and creative sectors. While the debate around Digital Britain often centres on broadband access, it is vital to remember that, at heart, access is centred on people. Consequently, we’re delighted that Martha LaneFox is going to be presenting the 2009 Jodi Awards.”

Jodi Awards 2009 – national and international this year

Nominations are now being sought for the Jodi Awards 2009. The awards are for museums, galleries, libraries, archives, arts organisations and heritage venues that use digital technology to widen access to information, collections learning and creativity for disabled people .

Every kind of digital technology is eligible, e.g. websites, in-gallery interactives, audio-guides, PDA tours, multi-media projects. Three awards are UK wide:
· Digital Access Online
· Digital Access Onsite
· Digital Access for People with a Learning Disability – given jointly with the Rix Centre

And new in 2009:

· Digital Access Online –International

Matthew Cock, Chair of the Jodi Mattes Trust and Head of Web at the British said: “The Jodi Awards celebrate practice that inspires locally, nationally or internationally. We welcome nominations from all kinds of projects, small and big, low-tech and hi-tech and for small and large audiences. What counts is the value of your project and the quality of your engagement with disabled people.”

2009 is an exciting year for the Jodi Awards. First given in 2003, the Jodi Awards started out in museums, libraries and archives. This year, the Jodi Mattes Trust Art are particularly keen to encourage galleries and art organisations to nominate their projects. The Trust is pleased to acknowledge grant aid from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council for the Jodi Awards 2009.

The International Award for Digital Access Online is an exciting new departure, made possible by sponsorship in kind from the Human-Computer Interaction Research Group at the University of York , which undertakes web accessibility testing for the Jodi Awards. The same disabled users who assess UK websites will test overseas websites in the English language .

The Jodi Awards will be announced on 2 December at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s prestigious Sackler Centre at a joint event with the Museums Computer Group .

Deadline for nominations is Friday 25 September 2009. Full information on how to apply is available at: http://tinyurl.com/nqhhf8

Matthew,
I am out of the country at the moment, but I did get your email. Many thanks and I will have a look at it just as soon as I get back. As I said, I have always been happy to see the good works of the Jodi Trust. Not really being involved in accessibility, not in this sense, I never actually got involved. Though I did supervise Jodi's dissertation on access to museum displays by the visually impared. Perhaps we can chat about this sometime when I get back. I'll be back tomorrow (Wednesday) and will be around all of the hols.

Hi Robin,

That's really fascinating that you have a connection with Jodi, and delighted that you helped her get the BM job. I was on the COMPASS team with Jodi, and am still at the BM, and one of the Trustees of the Jodi Mattes Trust (JMT) that now runs the awards. I'd like to send you our latest document - Strategic Aims 2009-12, so you can see how we're moving forward. We're going to be developing our own web presence in the coming year so we can have more of a presence - apologies for not keeping to my promise of making updates here. I'll send you a separate email Robin and I can add you to our contact list if you are interested.

Hi Jodi Award people. I was wondering what this group was for. I taught Jodi for her MPhil in Museum Studies, and helped her get the BM job. She was ill even then. I have always been happy to see the good work done under her name, but have not been at all involved. I just thought I would join to see what this group was doing.
