Doctoral Studies related to Museums

Thanks to Mariana for starting this group!
I am very interested in speaking with existing and future students of museum-related studies. As an Associate Professor, I am able to supervise doctoral candidates and generally contribute our research findings to the broader research agendas. « The system is a new paradigm for users interacting with their
environment and with their computer.
It will open up new possibilities for many new services, including those
facilitating the life of disabled or elderly people »

CALL FOR PAPERS

Taking Stock: Museum Studies and Museum Practices in Canada

Museum Studies Program, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto, Canada
April 22-24, 2010

http://takingstockmuseumstudies.ischool.utoronto.ca/

The Master of Museum Studies program at the University of Toronto marks its 40th anniversary with a conference that aims to create a forum for a nation-wide debate and critical examination of the academic discipline of Museum Studies in Canada in historical and contemporary contexts, and how this discipline registers within broader global traditions, pedagogies and practices.

Robert R. Janes will be providing the keynote address on Thursday, April 22, 2010.

**Instructions for submission of paper abstracts:

We invite proposals for twenty-minute papers (8-10 pp) that address the field of Museum Studies in Canada, as academic discipline and in terms of the nature of research this field and its practitioners undertake. We welcome contributions from a wide range of viewpoints that interrogate the field of Museum Studies, its histories, epistemologies, theoretical underpinnings and practices. Acknowledging that the discipline is itself informed by a variety of other disciplines, we are interested in diverse methodological and subject-area approaches. Presentations may include analyses of case studies, historical overviews, and comparative frameworks, as well as theoretical articulations of and for museological practice. For more information see http://takingstockmuseumstudies.ischool.utoronto.ca/

Delegates who would like to participate in the event but who wish not to present are encouraged to contact Nina Boric at nina.boric@utoronto.ca (416.505.8009) to register their interest.

Please feel free to post and/or share this call with interested others!

Hi,
At present I am looking for the PhD in museum studies. For now I have received papers from Leicester university and just wonder, maybe there are some other universities which could propose museum studies PhD as in Lithuania there are no such possibilities.
I work in museum sector for 8 years as project manager and have finished Master degree in culture policy and management in UNESCO unit in Vilnius Art Academy. Personally I am interested in museum management, branding, visitors experience, social media use in museum activities and museum marketing.
I just would like to find out other opportunities for PhD research not only in Europe.

Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones

A two-day international symposium for PhD students and early career researchers.

Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th December 2009.
University of Leicester, UK.

Join us at the new School of Museum Studies this December for the symposium Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones.

Museums are all about the material world; the display and preservation of works of art, their presentation and interpretation to audiences. Yet, it can be argued that it is the 'intangible' elements of objects, museums and their audiences which create meanings from the material world. Between the 'material' and the 'intangible' often a controversial, defined division is perceived. Materiality and Intangibility: Contested Zones intends to challenge this fixed division and explore a more fluid conceptual space, where the ‘material’ and the ‘intangible’ interweave.

We have devised an exciting programme of presentations and workshops, keynote speakers and artistic interventions, which engage with materiality and intangibility in inspiring and innovative ways.

Confirmed keynote speakers: Dr Sandra Dudley, University of Leicester and Dr Kostas Arvanitis, University of Manchester.

A provisional programme shall be available shortly. Please refer to The Attic (http://attic-museumstudies.blogspot.com) for further details.

The events will be hosted by the research student community based at the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, a leading internationally renowned centre for Museum Studies and teaching since 1966. The School was recently assessed as having the highest proportion of world-leading research in any subject in any UK university (RAE 2008).

Booking fee: £20 (includes lunch and refreshments and refreshments on both days).

Please see The Attic for more information and a downloadable/printable booking form.

hello,

I'm a PhD student in museum studies at National Natural History Musuem in Paris (France). My research is on science musems and science centers cover of climate change. I use a sociological approach. I study three French science centers and the Science Museum in London.
If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask. You could also have a look on my research web page (www.soichot.com/research).

Meriam sent a message looking for a research team / university who work on museum studies. I looked such a team in UK (where I could be invited to run my field work at Science Museum London). I found one at King's College (education science) but in my reserach I list this following researcher/team/university :
Leceister University of course
Center for museology, manchester University http://www.arts.manchester.ac.uk/museology/
Sharon Mc Donal at Manchester University http://www.sharonmacdonald.net/
Paul Bassu at Sussex University
Gordon Fyfe at Keele University
Christian Heath at ling's College http://www.umds.ac.uk/schools/sspp/mgmt/people/academic/heath.html

I hope those informations could help you. I am also a french student and I found a reserach team in UK, so you can find one ! Don't hesitate to contact people. It's easier if you can meet them in person (during a conference for example)

I'm joining this group because I supervise doctoral students at Newcastle University (UK) so I am very interested in how we research museums, galleries and heritage - the methods and theories we use and develop. My own research interests are national museums, identity, and cultural theory/museology.

Meriam, Silvia Filippini Fantoni is a lecturer at the Sorbonne and has been teaching courses on digital technolgies for museums. She also recently completed a PhD there on bookmarking technologies, and has worked with a number of international museums. Perhaps you can locate her in your campus directory? She is working in London currently, but I'm sure she would be happy to talk to you about your research. A 2007 biography of Silivia can be found at http://www.archimuse.com/mw2007/bios/au_215013122.html Hope that helps!
