John H Falk and Lynn D Dierking, experts in museum evaluation and learning theory, will share insights from two current research projects in free-choice learning in museums at this free seminar for museum and gallery professionals.
Bookings essential on (02) 6208 5021.
Falk and Dierking have had a major influence on museum
evaluation, visitor research and learning theory since their publication The Museum Experience first appeared in 1992. The book summarised what was known about why people go to museums, what they do there and what they learn. Falk and Dierking have continued to study and publish since then in a field they have made their own: ‘free choice learning’ (the concept of museum visitors wishing to learn, and gain meaning, from experiences which they seek out for themselves).
After the seminar, join Falk and Dierking for afternoon tea provided by the Museums Australia Evaluation and
Visitor Research Special Interest Group.
The National Museum of Australia gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Museums Australia and the University of Canberra’s Donald Horne Institute for Cultural Heritage.
